International Youth Day holds a special significance and is being observed on the 12th of August annually, as it recognizes the crucial contribution of young people as the cornerstone of our countries. Their vigour, tenacity, and commitment possess the capability to propel constructive transformations, on both a global and local scale.
An internationally recognized definition for the term
"youth" is lacking, though the United Nations employs the age range
of 15-24 years for statistical clarity.
Roughly, 3 billion individuals under 30 years old,
constituting approximately half of the global population, belong to the present
youth generation. This group holds untapped potential that can be harnessed to
contribute significantly to the advancement of society.
As this day highlights their contributions, it also sheds
light on the myriad challenges that confront today's youth on a global scale.
From economic uncertainties to limited educational opportunities and the quest
for meaningful employment, the youth of today grapple with complex obstacles
that demand innovative solutions for a better tomorrow.

Challenges - Obesity, unemployment, and psychological disorders emerge as
prominent hurdles confronting the contemporary youth. Research underscores a di

connection between increased screen time (via smartphones, internet usage, and
social networking platforms) and the rise of anxiety, depression, and even
thoughts of self-harm. Additionally, substance experimentation stemming from
feelings of isolation, despair, tension, or personal struggles can
inadvertently lead to hazardous addictions.
Mental Wellbeing - Amid the whirlwind of commitments and priorities, adhering to a structured routine often takes a backseat. Yet, neglecting this aspect carries lasting repercussions on the youth's overall quality of life and mental welfare, influencing their personal, social, and professional functionality. Nurturing mental health necessitates embracing an active and wholesome lifestyle, encompassing factors like sufficient sleep, a well-balanced diet, steering clear of addictive substances, and incorporating regular physical exercise - all pivotal for both physical and psychological equilibrium.
Emotional Struggles - It's undeniable that young individuals are widely recognized for embracing distinctive lifestyles. This trend isn't astonishing, considering that numerous individuals, especially the youth, have grown typical to defining their self-worth and assessing others based on the symbols they display and the smartphones they possess. These mindsets have the potential to cultivate feelings of insufficiency and scarcity, ultimately creating a divide between how one sees themselves and their envisioned ideals.
Hormonal Changes - Adolescence, marked by hormonal fluctuations, naturally ushers in intense emotions, putting young individuals at risk of grappling with adverse mental health consequences. When teenagers confront overwhelming sentiments such as isolation or excessively stressful situations that undermine their self-esteem, the likelihood of self-destructive behaviours like self-harm or suicide attempts increases.
Accordingly, in commemorating International Youth Day, we
celebrate the potential and vitality of our global youth while acknowledging
the pressing challenges they confront today. From mental health strains augmented
by digital influences on the profound impact of societal pressures, it is
imperative that we collectively foster a supportive environment that empowers
them to overcome these obstacles and realize their aspirations for a brighter
future.
